COPING WITH CHEMO BRAIN

Many cancer patients report difficulty processing and remembering information, a diagnosable condition called chemo brain. It is usually associated with chemotherapy, but other treatments can cause the condition as well. Always tell your doctor about any changes in your thinking. Evaluations for chemo brain are considered medical procedures and are usually covered by health insurance.

Tips from MD Anderson Cancer Center and American Cancer Society:

• Exercise: Even five minutes of mild to moderate activity may improve

mental function.

• Memory aids: Use a notebook, planner or smart phone to keep track of

things as they come to mind. A recording app could be helpful too.

• Do the most demanding tasks at the time of day when you feel your

highest energy level.

• Try not to multi-task. Focus on one thing at a time.

• Pick a certain place for commonly lost objects, like keys, and put them

there each time.
