Democratic lawmakers from N.M. tout deal on budget

New Mexico’s all-Democratic congressional delegation voted Saturday in favor of a last-minute deal to avert a government shutdown.
U.S. Reps. Melanie Stansbury and Gabe Vasquez, who represent New Mexico’s 1st and 2nd districts respectively, put out statements Saturday explaining their votes.
“This is a huge win for the thousands of New Mexicans who deserve to get their paychecks and who rely on federal assistance to make ends meet,” Stansbury said. “While we will continue to negotiate over appropriations and funding bills for the upcoming fiscal year, this measure avoids a shutdown and ensures all federal workers are paid. This will save hundreds of thousands of Americans from falling behind on bills and allows them to continue to put food in the table. Today, we put people over politics.”
Vasquez similarly praised the deal, although he lamented that it does not include “much-needed funding to support the good people of Ukraine” and said he remains committed to helping Ukraine.
“This continuing resolution, although frustrating and flawed, is the only option to support the people of the Second District,” he said. “Passing this bill will ensure critical resources are available for veterans, working families and seniors while also ensuring we have national defense and public safety resources.”
U.S. Sen. Ben Ray Luján echoed Vasquez’s concerns about Ukraine and said Congress needs to act separately to fund Ukraine aid.
“This protects federal employees in New Mexico and across the country,” he said. “But make no mistake — this was a manufactured crisis from House Republicans who did not keep their word to the American people. The Senate worked on a bipartisan basis from day one to avoid a shutdown, and I will continue to work with my colleagues to deliver long-term funding that provides certainty to the American people.”
