GO THEIR OWN WAY

A trio of Santa Fe’s indie bookstores offer fan-centric events, esoteric books, and good old-fashioned bookselling

By Eli Ellison

The streets of Santa Fe breathe a rich literary history, from Lew Wallace penning Ben-Hur at the Palace of the Governors to a pre-fame Tony Hillerman pounding the pavement as a reporter for The New Mexican in the 1950s.

“Every time you fall over someone in this town, it’s either an author or a poet,” says Dorothy Massey, owner of the Santa Fe International Literary Festival’s partner bookshop, Collected Works Bookstore & Coffeehouse. It’s independent bookstores like Collected Works and more than a dozen other indie shops in town that help make this a high-desert haven for lovers of the printed word.

Here are three indie bookshops where you might lose track of time while leafing through a hefty George R.R. Martin novel or perhaps a Spanish-language copy of Gabriel García Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude.
