TYPES OF CANCER
• CARCINOID TUMORS are a type of neuroendocrine tumor that is slow
growing and usually found in the rectum and small intestine.
• CARCINOMAS are the most common type of cancer that originate in the skin, lungs, breasts, prostate, colon, bladder and other organs and glands. They begin in the lining layer of organs.
• HEMATOLOGIC (blood) cancers primarily affect blood, bone marrow and
lymph nodes, and may or may not create an actual tumor.
• LEUKEMIA begins in the blood-forming tissue of the bone marrow, blocking
the production of normal white or red blood cells. It does not form solid tumors.
• LYMPHOMA begins in infection-fighting cells of the immune system,
called lymphocytes, in the lymph nodes and other organs of the body.
• MESOTHELIOMA is a rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure. For more
information, visit mesothelioma.net or call 1-800-692-8608.
• MULTIPLE MYELOMA begins in plasma cells, a type of immune cell, and
builds up in the bone marrow and forms tumors in bones throughout the body.
• SARCOMAS are rare and form in bone and soft tissues, including muscle,
fat, tendons, blood vessels and cartilage.
