Hampton Sides peruses his orderly shelves of books in the living room. This stack of classics was a counterintuitive gift from his father for his 1984 Yale graduation: a Harvard education. "He bought me this vintage collection of Harvard Classics from a used bookstore in Nashville. He died only a few years after that, so I’ve always cherished these moldering old books — not just for the wisdom they contain, but because the mere sight and smell of them conjures up fond memories of my dad," Sides says.
