“St. John’s College is a literary salon.”

ST. JOHN’S COLLEGE IS AMERICA’S GREAT BOOKS COLLEGE. A literary education at St. John’s is like no other in America. Rather than looking forward, we go back to the thinkers who led us to where we are today. Here, students engage in unmediated conversation with great minds from across three millennia of literature: thinkers who are, themselves, having a conversation with one another. This means that we go to the source texts rather than to the critics who interpret the source. Through this process, we see great theories rise, battle, and fall—and influence the next great thinker. Through these thinkers, we observe our own ideas rise and fall. The great books gift us the distance of time, through which we learn to see ourselves, our world, and each other with clarity and wisdom. This is just a small taste of St. John’s College. This is education at its most literary.
