Summer headliner preview

A half-century after the Beatles disbanded, Ringo Starr still gets by with a little help from his friends. Starr and his titular All-starr Band will hit the Rio Rancho Events Center September 20 as part of a 19-city tour that will take him from California to Florida and several points between.

The current iteration of Starr’s band includes Steve Lukather (founding member of Toto), multi-instrumentalist Edgar Winter, vocalist Colin Hay (Men at Work), guitarist/bassist Hamish Stuart (Average White Band), horn player Warren Ham (Toto), and drummer Gregg Bissonnette.

The All-starr Band held a Zoom press conference to announce their tour on May 17, and Pasatiempo asked Starr if his longevity with the All-starr Band concept surprises him.

“I didn’t think of it. I was just doing it,” says Starr, who first pulled together a conglomeration of All-starrs for a tour in 1989. “It’s been a long time now, 34 years with a couple years’ break because of the pandemic.

“But it’s what I do. I love to play, and I love to play with great musicians. I love to play great songs, and I get all of that from these guys.”

Starr is just one of the high-profile concerts coming to New Mexico over the next few months. Here’s a road map to some of the bigger venues and their summer offerings.

Kit Carson Park: They may not have a Beatle playing in Taos this summer, but they’ve got the legendary front man from Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant and Alison Krauss will play Kit Carson Park as part of their Raise the Roof tour on June 17.

■ Isleta Amphitheater: It’s an eclectic mix of shows at Isleta, with Snoop Dogg (August 22) and 50 Cent (August 27) sharing the same venue with Smashing Pumpkins (August 13) and a host of country music attractions (Luke Bryan on July 28, Dierks Bentley on August 12, and Jason Aldean on October 6).

■ Sandia Resort and Casino Amphitheater: Iconic mic-master LL Cool J rocks the bells in Sandia on August 27, and the stage will also host Ludacris (June 23) and blues legend Buddy Guy (July 28) over the course of the summer.

■ Kiva Auditorium: Tori Amos graces the indoor Kiva Auditorium on July 18, and she’ll be followed by Chicago on August 12 and Kansas on September 22.

■ Rio Rancho: Incubus (August 25) will hit Rio Rancho about a month before Ringo Starr. — S.F.
