The Crucible, National Theatre Live in HD series at the Lensic

Plays and musicals by American authors or on American subjects have been hot properties in London lately, with its flagship National Theatre alone producing The Crucible, The Lehman Trilogy, The Normal Heart, Trouble in Mind (about the paucity of Black characters in 1950s Broadway musicals), Follies, and Hadestown during its last few seasons. The Crucible starred Erin Doherty (The Crown’s young Princess Anne), and the Salem witch-hunt drama earned some rapturous reviews, such as The Telegraph’s “A gripping revival of Arthur Miller’s masterpiece speaks to us with urgent force,” and The Times’ “The Crucible is a five-star scorcher . ... A great play has found a powerful, timely production.” One of its themes was “common vengeance writes the laws,” as Miller wrote, which could apply equally to today’s climate that often leads to the denial of free speech to those with conflicting views and police brutality. This sadly timely tale is transferring to London’s West End later this year, but you can catch it here first in the NT Live in HD series at the Lensic. 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, Lensic Performing Arts Center, 211 W. San Francisco St., $22, 505-988-1234, lensic.org — Mark Tiarks/for The New Mexican
