Route 66 lecture at San Miguel Chapel

In late 1984, the last section of Route 66 still in use was bypassed by Interstate 40 at Williams, Arizona, completing the road’s transformation from the key east-west arterial to cultural curio. Nearly 40 years later, the decommissioned road still captures the imagination and invites fresh perspectives; in the past year, PBS aired a documentary featuring two Muslim Americans traversing the road for the first time, while Kenya native Brennen Matthews published Miles to Go: An African Family in Search of America Along Route 66 via University of New Mexico Press. Santa Fe’s Willie Lambert has a simpler documentation method: He has mapped sections of the highway and collected hundreds of postcards tied to the road, storing his discoveries and written observations in more than two dozen binders. His simple goal: sharing his findings with the public. He’ll do just that during a pair of presentations at another location known for its history: San Miguel Chapel. Noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, and Sunday, March 26, free, San Miguel Chapel, 401 Old Santa Fe Trail, sanmiguelchapelsantafe .org — B.S.
