Postcards from Cuba

Their eyes have seen a Cuba that probably isn’t visible to the rest of the world. In the exhibition Foto Cuba, Artes de Cuba and gallery co-founder Stuart Ashman bring the vision of nine Cuban photographers and what they see there to Santa Fe. “I am always combining beauty and poor spaces because I grew up in the countryside,” says artist Leysis Quesada Vera, who, in some work, photographs exquisite ballet dancers in rundown backdrops. Nelson Ramírez de Arellano pairs photos of old Havana with the present day city by embedding one in the other. Ashman says that not everyone considers the Cuban art on par with the work in Europe, American, and other vaunted art locales, and he’s determined to change that impression. “It’s important for me to show the American public that Cuban artists are just like artists in this country and everywhere else.” On the cover is René Peña’s Tutú (2023), archival pigment print; courtesy of Artes de Cuba
