SUPPORTIVE CARE

Q: What is Supportive care?

A: Supportive care (formerly known as Palliative care) is provided by a specially-trained team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who work together with a patient’s other doctors to improve the quality of life for both the patient and the family. The services are covered by health insurance.

Q: How can Supportive care help me?

A: As a team, we do a comprehensive assessment that includes symptoms that commonly affect people with serious illnesses like cancer. We address these symptoms to help prevent and relieve suffering, discuss your goals to help match your care to your specific wishes, and address current and future needs by helping to plan and coordinate care.

Q: When should I seek Supportive care?

A: We encourage you to ask your provider for a referral (required for a visit) at any time you believe you could benefit from additional support during your illness or treatment. Supportive care is appropriate at any age and at any stage in a serious life-threatening illness and can be provided as an extra layer of support along with curative treatment. Early Supportive care for patients with a life-threatening illness improves quality of life and alignment of treatment with personal goals.
