Luis P. Ortega joined our heavenly Father on Tuesday, November 23, 2021, at the age of 89. He passed peacefully after a brief illness.

Luis is survived by his wife, Dolores G. Ortega of over 50 years and nine children: Robert Maestas (Judy), Mimi Maestas, Tammy Ortega (Martin), Barbara Nava (Jaime), Louis F. Ortega (Judy), John Patrick Ortega, Mary Armijo (Peter), James Ortega and David Ortega. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, twenty-seven greatgrandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.

Luis was preceded in death by his parents, Luis D. Ortega, Stella Ortega, and son John Martin Ortega.

After graduating high school, Luis enlisted in the US Navy and was stationed on the USS Duncan during the Korean War. He received the following medals: The Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, & the China Service Medal. After his service in the navy, he worked for and retired from the State Engineer’s Office.

Luis was a man of God with a heart of gold. He was a kind and gentle person who was always willing to help anyone in need. He was a man of integrity and made many friends during his lifetime.

Our family is blessed to have had an amazing role model of a husband, father, and grandfather for so many years. He will be sorely missed and forever in our hearts.

A viewing will take place on Monday, December 20 at 5:00 pm followed by the rosary at 6:00 pm at the Berardinelli Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held Tuesday, December 21 at the San Isidro Catholic Church (old church) at 9:00 am with interment to follow at Santa Fe National Cemetery.
