The Moor’s Account

Layla Lalami (Simon & Shuster, 2014)

Not set in New Mexico per se, this fictional memoir allows readers familiar with New Mexican history a backstory to Mustafa ibn Muhammad, a Moroccan slave that was part of a Castilian exploration to La Florida that led them to New Spain. Here in NM, we often learn of this novel’s narrator by his slave name, Estebanico. This book challenges us to think about the complexities of how history is preserved by “the victors,” and demands that we reconsider how a fully rendered history must include those oppressed and maligned by the victors. As Mustafa ibn Muhammad asserts in the novel, “And so I began to write my account. For every lie I had heard about the imperial expedition that had brought me to the edge of the world, I would tell the truth.”
