Aaron Karp

Herons (1999), acrylic on canvas Since 1979, artists Reg Loving and Aaron Karp have engaged each other in critical discourse on the subject of art. They’ve often shown their work in the same galleries, including Janus Gallery in Santa Fe and, now, New Concept Gallery. Loving, a painter of Southwestern landscapes and abstractions, is a versatile painter whose practice is an ongoing exploration and rediscovery of his artistic identity. Karp explores perceptual phenomena and movement in non-objective abstractions using a complex combination of color, line, and form. Shared Histories, a two-person show of their work, continues through Nov. 6 at the gallery and online at newconceptgallery.com/virtual-shows.html. Face masks are required in the gallery. New Concept Gallery, 610 Canyon Road, 505-795-7570, newconceptgallery.com

Jason Kowalski

Big Piney Motel (2020), oil and mixed media on panel Artist Jason Kowalski paints the motels, antique automobiles, filling stations, and roadside eateries that date to America’s mid-century, but as they appear today: abandoned, sun-bleached, and derelict. But he conveys his reverence for these subjects through images that capture, in fine detail, a sense of memory and nostalgia. Kowalski incorporates collaged materials — newspaper clippings, faded photographs, and vintage postcards — in each meticulously crafted composition. These collaged elements, in turn, invite further consideration of the richness of America’s recent past. Kowalski’s solo exhibition, Rural Grandeur, continues through Nov. 13. Face masks required. LewAllen Galleries, 1613 Paseo de Peralta, 505-988-3250, lewallengalleries.com

Daniel Ballesteros

Gold Leaf Forest No. 099 (2020), gold leaf and imitation gold leaf applied to archival inkjet print Artist Daniel Ballesteros is drawn to the adaptability of the redwood, one of the planet’s largest arboreal species. Following in the tradition of gilding religious imagery with gold leaf, Ballesteros lends majesty to his subjects by doing the same with photographs. He gilds composite imagery of the imposing trees, emphasizing their awe-inspiring presence. The matte surfaces of the exposed part of the photographs contrast with the reflective quality of the gilding, giving the images a sense of depth. Ballesteros was inspired by the resiliency of his Filipino ancestors and created the works as metaphors for lineage and survival. Gold Leaf Forest, a solo exhibition of eight of Ballesteros’ gilded photographs, continues through Nov. 12. Face masks and proof of vaccination are required.
