Galeri Batik Jawa Indigo Apparel
Innovation and Design
In 2007 Mayasari Sekarlaranti established Galerie Batik Jawa Indigo in Yogyakarta specifically for developing natural indigo batik. Originating in Java and worn by both men and women, this traditional textile features rich, vivid areas of blue against carefully constructed, luxuriously soft backgrounds. The successful organization employs 250 regional artisans, most of them women.

Women’s Empowerment
Textiles are an important expression of culture and status in Indonesia, and the people of West Timor produce an extensive variety. The traditional textiles of the remote village of Fatumnasi stand apart from others thanks to their vibrant colors and original weaving techniques.
The weavers of Fatumnasi hope that the recognition their crafts receive at local and international festivals will encourage younger women to return to this tradition and hand it down to future generations, ensuring that this important part of their culture remains intact.
