FATTILLO KENDJAEV, UZBEKISTAN Sustainability

Master artisan and natural dyer Fattillo Kendjaev weaves sustainability through all he does. Based in Bukhara, he has taught new generations the art and science of rug making through the UNESCO-supported School of Traditional Carpet Weaving, Embroidery and Natural Dyeing. He uses only natural, locally sourced fibers. All the colors one sees in his richly hued, handknotted rugs come from natural sources as well, ensuring less pollution from chemically based dyes and more support of local farmers who provide natural dye products. Madder root, cochineal, pomegranate, onion skin, mulberry leaves, indigo, walnut skin and more are used to create the rainbow of colors. Since founding the school, Kendjaev says he has trained almost 300 apprentices, including family members.
